The Best of Rome

The Best of Rome

Italy, my home away from home. I can’t count how many times I fantasized about throwing a dime in the Trevi Fountain, eating lunch on the Spanish Steps, and drinking wine in a beautiful family-run restaurant.

Upon arrival I realized that everything I heard about Rome was true; the magic in the air, the history around each corner, and the friendly Italians speaking the most romantic language. It was pretty crowded but in a good way. The way that makes you feel like there is always something important happening right next to you. Rome is a big city with lots of people so the first thing we needed to do was drop off our bags at our lovely hotel Leon’s Place and explore.

As soon as we dropped our bags we could breathe and began our 10 days in Italy with a delicious gelato. Chocolate, Vanilla bean, and Strawberry (we were already in our glee).

On the agenda for day one was a visit to the Fontana Di Trevi. Located just around the corner from our hotel and favourite Gelato spot- Gelateria la Romana was one of the most famous fountains in the world, how amazing is this? After shooting a few pictures, throwing money in the fountain, and making a wish we began the walk to the Spanish Steps. We sat in the Piazza di Spagna and people watched while eating a sandwich from a nearby shop. The beautiful staircase is a wonderful place to sit down, relax, and enjoy the views of Piazza di Spagna before doing a little shopping. At the bottom of the Spanish Steps you will find Via Condotti, this street would be best compared to Bond St in London or Champs-Elysรฉe in Paris. From Gucci to Prada all the luxury designers can be found nearby. After bopping around the shops we went back to our hotel to get ready for our first delicious dinner in Rome.

Having a love for creamy delicious pasta and being in Rome it only seemed fit that we visit the restaurant where Fettuccini Alfredo all started. In a lovely little square with more beautiful fountains was Alfredoโ€ฆ where the magic was made. We got soup and salad for a starter and then tried two delicious plates of pasta for our main. The Alfredo was just amazing. Presented in a bowl of beautiful sauce and a ball of pasta it was tossed right at your table for ultimate freshness. After finishing this amazing meal we were off to bed to dream of what tomorrow will bring.

It does not matter if you have been to Rome once, twenty times or lived there your entire life your next best meal or best day will surely surprise you.

We woke up and went down for a small but good breakfast then got ready to visit Vatican City. Getting dressed this morning I quickly remember reading about a dress code when entering St. Peter’s Basilica and got out my cell phone to google the proper attire. Men and Women must both refrain from wearing shorts or short skirts and sleeveless shirts. With the scorching temperature that morning and the limited amount of clothes brought in a backpack this request was a bit more challenging but I threw on a long skirt with a white blouse and grabbed my pink shawl for some extra coverage.

When arriving in Vatican City I was quickly shocked by the number of individuals harassing us to purchase a tour. After spending 45 minutes turning people away we quickly found our group and got our stickers to put loud and clear on our chest so people would leave us be. Out of every country I have traveled to in Europe this experience was the most overwhelming with people. When our tour started I was in awe of the statues, high ceilings, paintings, and quiet. So many people in such a large place but it was filled with quiet and respect. We got to see the Vatican Museum, The Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. We also got to eat our worst pizza of life that dayโ€ฆ yes I said it, the WORST pizza I have ever tasted.

A few tips when visiting Vatican City

  • Pack a lunch or wait until you leave for the day and head back into Rome to eat
  • Be careful of your belongings- a couple on the tour with us got a large sum of money stolen from their pack
  • Wear the appropriate clothing
  • The Sistine Chapel access is through the Vatican Museum

After taking in the beauty of this outside city and exploring every corner we decided to make our way back to our hotel for a little rest and to get a recommendation for dinner. We ended up eating in a restaurant outdoors a 10-minute walk from the hotel where I tried the best lasagna in the world. I would not be able to tell you where this restaurant was or what it was called. It was simply a hole in the wall, but my oh my was it special. This day was the day I had my best meal.

Have you ever had someone ask if you had one meal before you passed away what would it be?

Well, mine my friends would be this piece of lasagna from Rome.

Day 3 and we are excitedโ€ฆ What is on the agenda for today? A little espresso to start the day and some delicious fruit and then we are making our way to the Colosseum. When I think of the Colosseum I think of watching movies with my Dad; Spartacus and Gladiator were staples when I was growing up so when I stepped inside the falling walls and immediately found myself in a film. When I closed my eyes I could picture the fight scene, I could smell the blood and see men cheering in the stands. When I open them I can see selfie sticks and families huddling together to take the 100th photo of the day. I preferred my imagination at that moment. The history among these walls was incredible, such a famous venue for gladiator battles, chariot races, and exotic animals to be shown off to the public. All of this amazement aside this place was a place that brought death upon a lot of people and animals. Over 400 years there were upwards of 400,000 people who were killed in these walls and 1,000,000 animals murdered for show. We spent the day exploring, appreciating, and listening to the stories that were told about what happened years ago.

Leaving the Colosseum we decided to eat like a Roman. We found a little authentic pizza shop and bought a bottle of red wine. With pizza boxes in hand and wine in the other, we went to sit in a square and enjoy our feast.

Our last day in Rome before we head to Florence and we only planned to explore! Grab some wine and cheese and just walk. Walk and stop and watch the people, hear the conversations around us and enjoy. We visited a few art galleries and loved every minute of it. To clue up these amazing days in Rome we got completely dressed up and fine dined at yet another recommended restaurant close by our hotel. With our belly’s full and wearing our big smiles we had to head to bed for some rest because tomorrow we were off to Florence.

Quidi Vidi- Mallard Cottage

Quidi Vidi- Mallard Cottage

The Mallard Cottage inn and restaurant

Quidi Vidi village- pronounced “Kiddy Vidi” is adjacent to Quidi Vidi Lake (well known from the St. John’s Regatta) and is known for several small successful local businesses. The one and only inn by Mallard Cottage opened in 2017 and is located in Newfoundland and Labrador. This local company is a true gem, hidden in the picturesque Quidi Vidi Village is this impeccable 5-star accommodation and restaurant. The inn by Mallard Cottage takes a mix of Newfoundland charm and modern coziness to make their own unique style. Just a stone throw (or a quick taxi ride) from downtown St. John’s, this inn should be on your bucket list.

Everything about the inn is quaint and impressive. With two houses containing only 7 king suites, the attention to detail is a work of art. Each room is furnished with the highest quality amenities and local dรฉcor and just like the art hung on each door made by Jessica Waterman it is all traditionally modern. You can see local businesses represented throughout the inn. East Coast Glow soap in every bathroom, Jeremy Charles new cookbook “Wildness“, quilts on every bed made in Clarkes Beach, Third Place Tonic, The Newfoundland Distillery’s spirits for complimentary cocktails, Quidi Vidi beer from the neighbours down the street and art pieces all around the inn. It is clear that Mallard Cottage does its part in supporting other local companies.

Food and beverage is where the inn and restaurant excels. When staying at the inn you have free drinks and snacks in your room and common area. In the morning outside your door you are greeted with a basket of baked goods (we had banana bread), coffee or tea, and juice. Right across the street is where the restaurant is located and the overwhelming amount of flavour in each dish will leave you breathless.

The dinner at Mallard Cottage was full of locally sourced, fresh ingredients. Being one of the top restaurants in NL you can expect a beautiful meal, great service, and a lovely ambiance. They work into their dishes an array of wild game, seafood, and produce. In the summer you can see the garden outdoors that has fresh veggies. I enjoyed a blueberry mojito (which was the featured cocktail that night). I have tried mojitos in Mexico, London, Greece, Italy, etc. and this cocktail had to have been the best one I have tried yet. For an appetizer, I had flatbread with braised mutton, turnip slaw, and sour cream and spaghetti bolognese with greens and parmesan for my main. Unfortunately, I did not leave room for dessert but all three offerings looked delicious.

Brunch the next dayโ€ฆ my oh my, if you thought you have had the best breakfast sandwich before, but have not tried Mallard Cottageโ€ฆ think again. A friend recommended for me to try it saying that “If there was only one meal I could eat every day for the rest of my life it would be Mallard’s breakfast sandwich” and it lived up to the hype. Paired with the best breakfast sandwich I had a delicious hot coffee and a side of wedges (that were amazing) and once again left with a full belly and a happy smile. Both meals were served by the lovely waitress Becca- talk about amazing customer service. One great feature about this restaurant’s brunch is the desert box you can get full of yummy cakes, muffins, and pastries (my recommendation is you STOCK UP)!

After brunch we seen a wedding party getting photos done, the scenic views of Quidi Vidi is perfect for a few amazing shots. This made me thinkโ€ฆ the inn would be a perfect place for a wedding party to stay after a reception at the beautiful restaurant. Once the night was coming to an end you could always visit our local friends (Quidi Vidi Brewery) up the street for some local craft beer.

The Mallard Cottage inn and restaurant is a small, peaceful, beautiful visit in Newfoundland. This would be the perfect date weekend for locals or a week’s stay for come from aways, I would highly recommend this accommodation! If you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place for you. A highlight for me was waking up to the birds in the morning, going for a walk where you see the fisherman filleting their fish and hearing the locals sing good morning to one another.

I can’t wait to come back for another weekend getaway!

Make sure you also take the time to explore your home in 2020.

The magical Greek Island of Mykonos

The magical Greek Island of Mykonos

We spent 5 days here and had such a memorable stay.

We arrived by boat and were shuttled to the beautiful Palladium Boutique Hotel. This stunning, luxe, Greek hotel was breathtaking from the minute you arrived. Family run and located in Platis Yialos they are known for excellent service and immaculate accommodations. As soon as we checked into our junior suite we made sure to explore the grounds and hit the pool. With kind individuals making sure to meet your every need you never went without a drink in hand, a snack nearby, or even an eyeliner on a night out. Pampering at Palladium is an understatement.

Once it was time to step outside the hotel there are a few beautiful beaches just a 5-minute walk away. One of my favorite places to eat lunch and then do some high-end shopping was in Nammos Village. This village of luxury shops and a delicious restaurant is located on Psarou Beach. Showcasing contemporary art at every turn this little village is a must-see in Mykonos. After we stopped for a delicious Greek salad and a visit to the Gucci store for new shoes we were off to get ready for our first delicious Mykonos dinner.

Buddha Bar beach restaurantโ€ฆ you outdid yourself. Food, cocktails, and ambiance. What an amazing experience. Being right on the ocean all you could hear was the crashing of the waves mixed with lively music. Mykonos being a party island they have mastered the art of making people dance on the beach but the Buddha Bar consistently maintained a classy/exciting vibe. We started with fancy cocktails and asked the waiter to pick all his favorite dishes. Dumplings, noodles, curry, sushi, more cocktails. We thought that we would have to be carried home. The outstanding flavors in every dish surprisingly perfectly balanced together to create an exceptional experience. I mean, who wouldn’t love sipping cocktails right on the Aegean Sea? A romantic evening that ended off with a barefoot walk down the white sandy beach, this restaurant is a hot spot for good vibes.

The following day we decided to explore the town of Mykonos and my friendsโ€ฆ it was like walking through a postcard. We first explored the windmills and crashing waves down the small cobblestone alleys. Then we proceeded to do a little shopping and have the most delicious pasta for lunch. We found the cutest boutique on the cobblestone paths called Inasami. It was a very windy day but so so hot! We decided to relax by the beach at a delicious little restaurant for dinner sitting in the sand we enjoyed some veggies and fresh seafood for a delicious late supper.

The next day we snuggled up in the morning and took our time making our way to breakfast. We sat in the sun and enjoyed the most delicious omelets made by the staff at Palladium. Lying by the pool and a quick workout at the gym this day was meant for sunbathing and relaxation. While relaxing near the pool the staff at Palladium Prepared us the most delicious lunch consisting of sandwiches and smoothies we were in our glee.

All the relaxation was important to get us ready for a night out on the town. Mykonos is known for a few amazing things; its white beaches, delicious food, beautiful windmills, and exciting nightlife. We got all dressed up, got in a cab, and made our way to Scorpios Restaurant. Talk about good vibes, fun music, and great food. Scorpios is a must-visit in Mykonosโ€ฆ I feel like this is where the saying Boho chic was invented. If you want to dance the night away with a group of chill people the DJs will have you on your feet. Scorpios has built a community of lovely people, good vibes, and is the perfect place to dance the night away.

Our last day in beautiful Mykonos. We were greeted in the morning by the lovely staff at our boutique hotel. With not much planned we decided to rent an ATV And explore the island. This has to be the easiest way to get around Mykonos and I would highly recommend if you know how to drive! Today we took the opportunity to explore all the amazing beaches that Mykonos has to offer.

Before we left to travel Greece our friends told us that Mykonos was a place to come for late-night partying and amazing beaches and boy were they right! We had the most amazing time and we were ready to take on six days of drinking wine and relaxing in Santorini (post to come).

If you have traveled to Mykonos before and would like to leave some additional recommendations in the comment section we would greatly appreciate it โ˜บ๏ธ
